Frequently Asked Questions – Modern Acupuncture Adelaide

At Modern Acupuncture, we understand that patients often have questions about acupuncture, treatment techniques, and what to expect. Below are answers to some of the most common questions. If you don’t see your question here, please contact us.

What conditions can acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture is used as supportive care for a range of presentations, including:

Treatment is individualised and delivered alongside your existing medical or allied health care.

What techniques are used in treatment?

Depending on your presentation, treatment may include:

  • Motor point acupuncture

  • Distal acupuncture

  • Electro-acupuncture (using a mild electrical current through needles)

  • Soft tissue techniques, gua sha, or cupping for musculoskeletal support

The selection of techniques is based on clinical assessment and patient needs.

Internal link suggestion: See How We Do It for more detail about treatment techniques.

Do you use Chinese herbal medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine may be offered when appropriate, alongside acupuncture. Only patent herbal formulations manufactured under Australian standards are used, in pill, capsule, or granule form. Formulas may be used short-term for acute issues or longer-term for ongoing support, depending on individual needs.

Is acupuncture safe?

All treatments are delivered by Luke Whelan, an AHPRA-registered practitioner. Sterile, single-use needles are used, and treatments are conducted following Australian safety and hygiene standards.

Acupuncture is considered safe when provided by a qualified practitioner and may be used alongside your medical care.

How often will I need treatment?

Treatment frequency is tailored to your individual needs. Some people attend weekly or fortnightly, while others receive care as needed for short periods. During pregnancy or IVF support, more frequent treatments may be recommended based on individual assessment.

What should I expect during a session?

Appointments typically involve:

  1. Consultation & Assessment – Discussion of your health history, symptoms, and goals

  2. Treatment – Acupuncture and any additional techniques appropriate for your presentation

  3. Self-Care Guidance – Advice on posture, lifestyle, or exercises if relevant

For more detail, see How We Do It.

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not required to see Luke Whelan for acupuncture. However, if you are under medical care for a specific condition, it is helpful to bring relevant information so treatments can be coordinated appropriately.

How do I make an appointment?

Appointments can be made via phone or through our online booking system. Early booking is recommended to secure preferred times.

Can I claim a private health rebate?

Many private health funds provide rebates for acupuncture. Claims can usually be made at the time of payment. Please check your fund for eligibility and rebate details.
