IVF Acupuncture Support in Adelaide: What to Expect
IVF can involve a lot to manage—appointments, medications, changing timelines and plenty of uncertainty.
I have been supporting people through IVF and fertility treatment since 2006. During that time, I have worked with patients at many different stages of their journey, from preparing for their first IVF cycle through to transfer and early pregnancy.
My role is to provide calm, individualised acupuncture care alongside the treatment you receive from your fertility clinic.
Support From Someone Who Understands the IVF Process
IVF rarely follows a perfectly predictable timetable. Medication may change, scans can alter the plan and collection or transfer dates are sometimes confirmed at short notice.
Having worked with IVF patients for more than 19 years, I understand the different stages of a cycle and the need to remain flexible as your treatment progresses.
At your appointments, you won’t need to explain the basics of IVF or why your schedule has suddenly changed. We can adapt your acupuncture appointments to your circumstances and the advice you receive from your fertility specialist.
When Should I Start Acupuncture?
If time allows, I often suggest making contact around three months before a planned IVF cycle. This gives us time to discuss your health history, understand your fertility treatment and establish a regular treatment routine.
However, three months is not a requirement.
People often contact me shortly before starting medication, during an IVF cycle or once their embryo-transfer date has been confirmed. If your cycle is already underway, we can discuss whether and how acupuncture may fit into your current schedule.
There is no need to feel that you have “left it too late” to ask.
Acupuncture During an IVF Cycle
The timing and frequency of appointments are discussed individually. Depending on your circumstances, acupuncture appointments may be scheduled:

Following transfer and during early pregnancy, if appropriate
You do not have to commit to every stage. We can develop an approach that suits your needs, timetable and budget.
Before and After Embryo Transfer
Pre- and post-transfer appointments can be arranged on the day of your embryo transfer, subject to availability and the timing provided by your IVF clinic.
Because transfer times are sometimes confirmed at short notice, please contact me as early as possible once you have an approximate transfer date. We can then adjust the appointment times when your clinic confirms the final details.
Treatment is provided at Modern Acupuncture in Frewville, approximately ten minutes from the Adelaide CBD.

What Happens at the First Appointment?
Your first appointment begins with a detailed conversation about:

We will then discuss an individual treatment plan. This includes the possible timing and frequency of appointments, rather than placing everyone on the same standard program.
Acupuncture uses fine, sterile, single-use needles. Many people find the treatment room provides a welcome opportunity to slow down and have some quiet time away from the clinical side of IVF.
You are always welcome to ask questions before or during treatment.
Chinese Herbal Medicine and IVF Medication
Chinese herbal medicine may sometimes be considered before an IVF cycle following an individual consultation.
I do not prescribe Chinese herbs while a patient is taking active IVF medication. This avoids potential interactions and helps ensure that your acupuncture care remains clearly coordinated with your medical treatment.
A Realistic and Honest Approach
Research examining acupuncture during IVF has produced mixed findings. Acupuncture cannot guarantee pregnancy, implantation or a successful IVF outcome, and I will never suggest otherwise.
My approach is to provide professional, individualised supportive care during what can be a demanding and emotional process.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I need a referral from my fertility specialist?
No. You can make an appointment without a referral. It is helpful to bring information about your IVF protocol, medications and expected dates.
Is it too late to start if my IVF cycle has already begun?
Not necessarily. Contact me with your approximate timetable and we can discuss whether acupuncture can be included during your current cycle.
Does acupuncture improve IVF success rates?
Research findings are mixed, and acupuncture should not be presented as a way to guarantee or predict IVF success. It is offered as complementary care alongside the treatment provided by your fertility clinic.
Can I have acupuncture after embryo transfer?
Acupuncture may be provided following embryo transfer and during early pregnancy when it is appropriate for the individual. Please advise me immediately of a confirmed or possible pregnancy so that your treatment can be adapted accordingly.
How much does IVF acupuncture cost?
Standard and transfer-day appointment fees are available on the Fees page. Private health rebates may be available depending on your insurer and level of cover.
